Public Pooping – Be Thankful This Season That We Aren’t 3rd World

I lived in a foreign country for a while.  This foreign country was majority third world, which really meant that about 1% of the population held all the wealth and 99% had nothing (and not in the way that American’s are claiming these days with their “We Are the 99%” campaign  – the majority of our 99% look like kings when compared to a third world country’s 99%). As a result, there was very poor plumbing (if at all) and public toilets in many of the extremely poor neighborhoods.  This meant that it was not entirely uncommon for someone to squat down in public and take a fat dump on the street.  Most people tried to do it discreetly and you would find a human poo sitting in a corner or alley.  But some just said “screw it” and would drop drawers on the side of the street in plain view.

Now compare that to America.  I am not going to say we are Singapore – no one is going to be caned for taking a dump outside in public – but its pretty rare to see someone full on dookie out in the open.  Maybe the homeless from time to time.  Reflecting on the overabundance of sweet bathrooms in stores, restaurants, gas stations, parks, malls, office buildings, etc etc etc, we are almost always able to hold it until we can find a facility in which we can find sweet relief in privacy.  When I think about how blessed we are, I just get a little tear in my eye of pride and love for America.

Next time you see someone yelling about how they are the 99%, feel free to take a dump on their shoe and remind them that while we ain’t perfect, we got a lot to be grateful for this Thanksgiving.

Very true. I think traveling helps give you some perspective on life here.

Indeed it does brain. I’m not saying we shouldn’t strive for the best we can here in our mothership, but perspective is important when we start feeling like victims.

I found this article on CNN and thought of your blog. The article mentions “World Toilet Day” and the fact that the world needs more toilets. Perfect article for your blog.

    Here it is:
